Over the two days you are led over high mountainous terrain in the Lake District national park, with the aim of coaching you on steep ground, developing your hill fitness, and building up your mountain awareness, to prepare you for trips to the Alps. The selection of the right kit is essential for Alpine trips, and we focus on this, and can advise on what kit you could buy to help you avoid costly mistakes. We currently have 4 spaces remaining on the weekend of 19-20 May 2012.

We launched the Swiss Snowshoe Weekend course this winter, and it has proved to be very successful and 2013 dates will be released in the next few weeks. You spend two amazing days snowshoeing in this area which is steeped in history. It is most famed for the Saint Bernard dogs, Napoleon crossing the Alps, and of course the Grand Saint Bernard Hospice which was founded in 1049, where you stay for the night in the monastery which is still run by the monks to this day.

The Haute Route route between the two historic mountain centres of Chamonix and Zermatt stretches for 114 miles and there is between 13,000m to 14,000m of ascent and descent taking you through some of the most famous landscapes in the Alps. Each night on the ski tour, you stay in mountain huts on a half board basis, with a mid-tour night in a hotel in Arolla to provide you a bit of luxury before the final section. There are a final 2 spaces on the trip running 22-28 April 2012.

There is a Zen-like quality of the ski tourer who is waiting to set off, who has the confidence that their pack is the smallest and lightest, yet they have everything required. Top tips to minimise your pack size are to take wet wipes rather than a towel, to carry boot crampons wrapped in your jacket rather than in a crampon bag, to wrap some tape around your ski poles instead of carrying a repair kit, and to embrace modern ski pin binding technology. Every gram counts, so analyse each one.

This winter season in the UK has fluctuated massively between lots of snow, then rapid melts and rainy conditions. In the Alps the season has seen amazing conditions throughout, and it is no small wonder why so many people travel to the Alps for the guarantee of routes in good and safe condition. This is a really popular winter course in which you learn key winter skills, and climb some waterfall ice and Alpine routes. The final course with 2 spaces is the 11 - 17 March.

For ski touring we advise that you don't attempt to use your usual ski poles that you have for downhill skiing, as for over half the time you are going to be using them for ascending or traversing. When doing this you are putting more weight on the pole, so require a larger snow basket. Also adjustable poles, or extended grips on the tops of the shafts are great as these enable you to adjust your grip on the poles to different heights to suit your balance and the uphill touring rhythm.

This also has a key focus on the avalanche risks, and provides plenty of handy tips on how to stay safe, and where is best to go. These snow reports will be produced regularly through the winter season, with advice on different winter sports. This week the report was made during a snowshoe trek, with future reports on skis and even whilst ice climbing.

This week includes five days of 1:2 ratio climbing with an expert ice guide on the best ice and gullies around Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif. In terms of previous experience, you should have climbed on ice before, and have good crampon skills. If you are travelling on your own, we match you together with someone else of similar experience, so the focus of the week is to enable you to climb classic routes that push your level. There are several hundred routes to choose from.

This is a NEW trip for this winter, based in the Val d'Aoste of north Italy, and it offers a huge range of remote and totally unspoilt areas for snowshoeing. We spent several weeks last winter scouting out all the route options, and have put together a great itinerary to show you the very best. Snowshoeing is a fast growing sport, especially amongst those who don't ski, and it gives you access into the best backcountry. You spend the nights half board in mountain huts and lodges.

A very popular course, based in Chamonix, with a great mix of backcountry skiing and an introduction to ski touring. This is a great springboard for those who dream of the Haute Route ski tour, but who haven't any touring experience. There is even the option of a night in a mountain hut on a two day mini tour. For this course, you will have skied a minimum of two weeks dedicated off piste before. Touring experience is not required, as all the skills and equipment are taught.

The ultra-trail racing bug has hit Europe, with major events running over mountains over several days. For one of our race videos, click on the link. This craze has led to the development of far better head torches. By far the brightest is the amazing 350 lumen Petzl Ultra. We've been testing one for the past month, and it provides the best lighting levels (choice of 3) that we have seen. If you need a bright headlamp look no further, but for travelling light (e.g. Mont Blanc or touring) buy the Petzl Tikka.

This stunning photo shows a couple of our teams last week taking the last few steps to the summit of the Eiger, with a sea of clouds far below filling the Grindlewald valley. On the day this picture was taken, we had three teams reach the summit. The technical level required for the ascent of the Mitelleggi Arete is similar to that of the Matterhorn. The exposure is greater, and the requirement for good crampon skills is higher, while the rock is easier due to some fixed ropes.

This trip is perfect for those seeking a great mixture of Alpine trekking and climbing. You traverse the Gran Paradiso national park in northern Italy, before making an ascent of the highest peak completely in Italy, Gran Paradiso 4061m. The final ascent requires crampons, harnesses and ropes, but is technically straight forward, and requires no previous experience. During the week you stay in remote mountain huts that are famed for their great food, and usually see ibex and eagles.

Ask any climber what their first Alpine route was, and they always can remember it. The first ascents are unforgettable, and there is so much to learn; the knots, skills, kit, objective risks, and timings, to name but a few. This course aims to teach you all the basic skills, culminating with the ascent of a 4000m peak, and key experiences such as ice climbing on a glacier, some rock climbing, and Alpine ropework for and crevasse rescue. We have some final course spaces for this summer.

As preparation for this type of route, we often see clients ascending the Dent du Geant and Aiguilles d'Entreves, with a night at altitude in the Torino refuge. The past week has seen major snowfalls at altitude across the Alps, which has brought much needed snow to the glaciers, and to reduce the risks of rockfall. Whilst this has taken some routes out of condition in the short term, due to avalanche risks while the snow stabilises, it is great news for routes including Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso. We heard of some people taking advantage of the recent snow to ski at the Grands Montets! Fortunately the sun is shining across the Alps today.

It is a dream for all ski tourers to complete the Haute Route across the mountains from Chamonix to Zermatt. This season was our busiest ever for groups on this tour, and generally conditions were good. Now the snowline across the Alps has risen to around 2500m, so the ski touring season has finished. Feedback from the Haute Route teams this year all cited the highlights as the amazing location of the Bertol hut, the summit of the Rosablanche, and the wild Arpette valley.

This winter will go down in history as the driest season for 30 years, but for off-piste and touring it was actually quite a good year. Some classic routes such as the Vallee Blanche were in poor condition, but other areas such as Courmayeur, the Rhemes valley and others had a great season. The weather was largely stable, and the avalanche risk was generally low. We are in the process of updating ski course itineraries for next winter, and the dates for these will be released soon.

The Mischabel region is peppered with 4000m peaks, with routes of all grades, yet it remains relatively unspoiled and an Alpinists playground. On this course you attempt some of the classics; Alphubel, Nadelhorn, Weissmeiss and Lagginhorn. There are so many variations that you can really make the most out of any conditions. A key feature of this week is that you spend four nights in remote mountain huts (half board), so this will really appeal to climbers who want to get away from it all.

The low quantity of snow in the Alpine valleys and frequent freeze thaw cycles, made 2011 an exceptional year for ice climbing. The icefalls all built up to exceptional volumes in February. There was a very stable snowpack in most of the classic ice areas; Chamonix, Cogne, and La Grave, so the avalanche risk was low, and many new routes were climbed. If you are keen to get out ice / winter climbing this year, there are still a few weeks available for 2 person winter weeks.

The good weather of the last few weeks have been great for those on our Best of Mont Blanc snowshoe weeks, and the lean lower slopes have seen our groups pushing further into the back country and bagging some great snowshoe summits. A key feature of this course is that you get to snowshoe in France, Italy and Switzerland during the week. All courses are led by top UIMLA snowshoe guides. There are 2 spaces remaining on the course running 27 March - 2 April.

This week we have another two groups on our Chamonix based Level 1 Adventure, and Level 2 Backcountry courses. Yesterday they reported good conditions at La Tour, and are skiing the Grands Montets and Argentiere glacier today. Tomorrow is the Toule glacier in Italy, then probably a day off piste in Courmayeur and even a day touring! The snow conditions are good at altitude, so if you are keen to really develop your off piste, the next spaces are on the 20-26 March course.

Each weekend we offer a range of two day courses in the Alps, from ice climbing to ski touring, winter skills and snowshoeing. This season these courses have been especially popular, as they avoid you taking time off work, with people flying out on Friday evening and returning on the Sunday night. Easter is late this year, on the 23-24 April, so if you are keen to get away we are running an Italian Snowshoe course, Intro Ski Touring weekend, and a Alpine Winter Skills course.

It's easy to understand the allure of Mont Blanc. At 4810m, it is the highest peak in the Alps and Western Europe. We offer ascents of this mightly summit every week of the summer, with at least 12 spaces on each week. Already most courses dates are half full, with several that only have a few final spaces. We expect several dates to be filled over the next couple of weeks, so if you feel ready for this challenge, get in touch as soon as you can to discuss the ascent and dates.

For the Alpine snow-doubters out there, here is a photo from last weeks off piste course in Chamonix, skiing at La Tour. They found good snow each day and also skied at Grands Montets, Val Ferret and Courmayeur. On the last day in Italy they were rewarded with 25cm of fresh snow. The guides use video analysis for groups, when it would help them to improve by seeing how they ski, and the film clips from this last week have been uploaded to our YouTube channel. The video can be viewed at; http://www.youtube.com/user/icicleUK.

This week has seen one decent snowfall, but next week looks forecast for plenty of snow, especially on the Italian side of Mont Blanc on Tuesday. This photo was taken by Julien when guiding a group on the Vallee Blanche recently, and it shows the sparse conditions up there, so the recent and forecast snows are great news. In Courmayeur at the moment there is 20cm of fresh at 2500m, so it's the pace to go for off piste skiing at the moment. You can check out our latest off piste photos at the link below.

Here is Stefano guiding on Mini Couloir on the Col des Montets. As the name suggests, he is an Italian guide, and one of the guests, Mano, is Italian too. Obviously they focused on ice climbing over the weekend rather than watching the 6 Nations rugby! Anyway, here they are on the first steep pitch, and they reported good ice conditions. Whilst the conditions for off piste have been challenging this year, our recent Zermatt Off Piste course showed that with a bit of ingenuity you can still have a great week of skiing in the Alps! On the forst day they enjoyed freeride skiing at Gornergrat, then the Pfulwe Pass with the ski descent to Tasch. In the middle of the week they made a ski tour ascent of the Breithorn, then the Theoldule glacier towards the Hornlihutte, with a ski descent of the lower slopes of the North Face of the Matterhorn! This photo was taken yesterday by Filippo, who is guiding the Off Piste Level 1 group in Chamonix this week. It's on the back of La Tour and shows that, whilst not knee deep by any stretch of the imagination, there's still some good snow out there to be skied. The cover on the glaciers remains very thin, but this level of course is more to instruct on ski technique, and video analysis is used at the end of each day to help clients develop their skiing. Today the group is on the Grands Montets, and the plan for tomorrow is a day over in Courmayeur in Italy. Our off piste courses are listed at; http://www.icicle-mountaineering.ltd.uk/offpiste.shtml

"I have just arrived back in Dublin, and would like to thank you for a fantastic week. It definitely exceeded my expectations, and my limitations. I did not realise I could walk so much and so high in such remote areas (mainly due to Kingsley's skill and style of motivation in such a positive way), and to trek in three countries in one week was amazing (France, Switzerland, Italy). I was interested to see what it would be like to go alone on a trip, and met with a great and interesting group of people, the week passed very quickly. It was excellent to learn about avalanches and such a vast amount about general mountaineering. Kingsley's knowledge is endless. The organisation and communication was excellent, even down to simple things, restaurants etc. I look forward to going back to Mont Blanc again. Once again thank you for a fantastic week". The recent dry and cold conditions in the Alps have been perfect for ice conditions, as you can see from Andy's photo from his Winter Intro course. The long range forecast is looking settled and cold for at least the next ten days to two weeks, so if you are planning a last minute trip to the Alps, then now's the time to come! We have had groups on many of the Val de Cogne, Chamonix and Val Savaranches icefalls in the last few days. Classics such as Cold Couloir are very safe due to thin snow cover higher up, and have seen many ascents. The Chamonix ski area includes classic runs such as the Vallee Blanche and Pas de Chevre, and also the Courmayeur lifts in Italy. This enables groups to ski the whole mountain, and for the guides to source the best snow. We run the off piste clinics on two technical / experience levels.

Frozen columns, curtains of ice, and altitude gullies. The thwack of an axe penetrating the ice, and jangle of ice screws on your harness, and the drip drip drip of icicles. Ice climbing is both an exhilarating sport and a sensory overload. It is no wonder that so many find it captivating, and this course aims to introduce you to the best in the Chamonix area. We have some clients who do this course year after year, to climb different routes, and there are several hundreds to choose from.

You spend five days snowshoeing in the Swiss Valais, staying on a half board basis in comfortable lodges. The areas we often visit include Champex, Grand Saint Bernard, Ravoire, and Val d'Anniviers. You are led throughout by a UIMLA professional snowshoeing guide.

The snowline has been steadily creeping downwards in the Alps, and so far there has been more snow on the south side of the Alpine arc. The Italian Val Ferret already has snow right down to the valley floor, and the cross country ski tracks are pisted and in use. In the key Alpine towns of Zermatt, Chamonix and Verbier, there is good snow cover in all the ski areas. Track the conditions on our live webcams page, or visit the site on your phone to visit our mobile website webcams page.

It is without doubt the most famous off piste route in the world, and if you are keen to tackle the Vallee Blanche above Chamonix, we have two options for you to consider. The most popular are our Off Piste clinics, which are run on Levels 1 (novice off piste) and 2 (one or two weeks off piste), and the Vallee Blanche is a key objective during the course on the day of best conditions and visibility. The other option is to hire a private guide for a day, who can take up to six people in a group.

Each year we take a good look at our environmental credentials, and make plans for the following season. We chose to become a Leave No Trace partner, as their ethos is very focused on teaching and enjoying minimum impact outdoor recreation. Everyone is involved from Icicle guides and leaders, right through to all the groups that we take out into the mountains. Click link for details.

The aim of the weekends is for groups to improve their confidence and movement on steep ground, to improve navigation, and to provide the opportunity for kit questions for future trips. Chere Couloir is a narrow gully on the North Face triangle of Mont Blanc du Tacul. Five pitches of ice lead up to a section of mixed ground that can be ascended to reach the summit of Tacul at 4248m. The ice pitches form at around 80 degrees, so are equivalent to Scottish grade 4 ice, and you can climb this route in summer as well as in winter, due to the ice being kept in great condition by the cool temperatures at altitude. Either technical or 12 point crampons can be used.

For the Mont Blanc ascent you need excellent fitness, stamina and determination. You do not necessarily need any previous crampon or altitude experience, though it would be a real bonus. Any skills you have will help, as well as great balance combined with the ability to move quickly and efficiently over broken mountain terrain is essential. You should be confident on steep ridges, but don't worry as you are taught all the necessary ropework and skills during the week.

B3: This type of boot has a solid sole unit, but a more flexible upper section. There is built in insulation to the boot, so it can be used in the summer or winter. It accepts all types of crampons and is very versitile for all types of climbing from rock to snow & ice. This is the one boot solution for all our courses. B2: This type of boot is designed for winter hill walking and so can accept crampons. It is not really an Alpine boot due to the comparative lack of insulation.

We achieved this through a highly flexible itinerary, to take advantage of the weather windows whenever they occured during the week. This photo is from some of final summit teams of the year. We have already updated our course itinerary for summer 2011, so if you are looking to ascend Mont Blanc next summer, get in touch to guarantee your space.

The sport of trail running in the Alps is getting very popular, and some of the key races see thousands of entrants. In this photo is Kingsley from our UIMLA guiding team finishing the 100km UTMB CCC race, which involves nearly 6000m of height gain. In reaction to the growth of interest in trail running, we offer a range of courses to teach you about the choice of equipment, coping with varied terrain, the use of poles, running on steep ground, what to carry, the effects of altitude, and much more.

This amazing route follows the knife edge snow ridge between the Dent du Geant and Aiguille du Rochefort, and it forms the frontier between France and Italy. The exposure is huge, and the views are unforgettable. In the background of this photo is Mont Blanc and its Brenva face. Icicle courses that often ascend this route are the Alpine Classics course, and the Matterhorn and Eiger courses as a 'warm up' route before the Hornli or Mittileggi ridge ascents later on during the weeks.

Mount Toubkal 4167m is the highest peak in North Africa, and is a trekking peak involving no climbing but the final two days involve walking in crampons holding an ice axe for security. The itinerary has been designed for keen walkers, as the ascent is non-technical, but involves some easy scrambling and snow slopes. This week long trip costs just £549, and Marrakech provides an interesting start and finish, where you can relax and enjoy shopping and eating in the ancient medina.

The weekends train people to be more safe and autonomous in the UK hills, and also to prepare them better for trips to the Alps. The selection of the right kit is essential for Alpine trips, and we focus on this, and can advise on what kit you could buy. A secondary aim of these weekends is to help assess your Alpine fitness level, and to develop it both on the course and in terms of advice for the run up to your Alpine trip. The next spaces are 30-31 October, or 6-7 November in the Lake District.

This is a colour photo, believe it or not, on the summit of Gran Paradiso yesterday. This 4061m peak is the final objective of the Alpine Intro course, and as you can see, the weather was decidedly cold! The poor old summit madonna is encrusted in rime frost. This group was guided by Stephane, and they had to move fairly quickly to keep warm. Obviously there weren't great summit views, but well done all for your efforts. At the end of this weekend, the Victor Emmanuel refuge closes for a few weeks.

Here is a photo from last weekends acclimatisation group on the summit of Mont Buet. For those planning an ascent of Mont Blanc, a good acclimatisation program is essential, as there is 50% less available oxygen at that altitude. Ascending successively higher peaks stimulates the production of red blood cells, and these are essential for carrying the oxygen platelets around the body. All our IFMGA and UIMLA guiding team are highly qualified in advising about acclimatisation, and spotting AMS.

What really sets us apart is that we aim to stay in high huts each night, rather than in the valley floors, to enjoy the best scenery and locations possible. Our groups are briefed to travel light to avoid baggage drops each day that limit people to valley bases. It's no wonder that this high hut strategy is proving so popular for clients.

These routes are both coming into the key season for their summer ascents, and here are a few training tips for those making last minute preparations for their climb. As well as very good aerobic fitness it is important to improve leg stability and core strength with high step exercises. Step onto and off a bench height object for ten minutes with one leg leading, then another ten minutes with the other leg leading. This replicates the repetitive high steps needed for these peaks.

This year has seen several Icicle groups peak bagging in the Saas region of the Swiss Valais. The Mischabel and Rimpfischhorn areas boast plenty of 4000ers, and some of the mixed ridges are amongst the best and longest routes of their grade in the whole of the Alps. Most of these Swiss peaks are adorned with ornate summit crosses, and they are served by a great network of huts. There are still two remaining spaces on the Saas course running the 5-11 September 2010.

If there is one course that our guiding team love leading more than any other, it is the Alpine Introduction course. They know how exciting a first trip to the Alps can be, and how important it is to teach you on the key safety and technical skills. It is the start of an apprenticeship on the road to becoming a mountaineer, and this course breaks down the elements into bite sized chunks; crampon skills, navigation, ropework, abseiling, glacier travel, and a 4000m peak at the end of the week.

The factors that influence the guides decision as to which route you take include the risk of rockfall in the Gouter Couloir, your fitness and skill on steep ground, weather, snow conditions, and which route provides the greatest chance of reaching the top. Either route is a real challenge, but for details on the routes, visit the Mont Blanc pages and visit the 'mountain focus'.

As promised in the last newsletter, here are some of the great photos from some guides and clients who ascended the classic north face of Gran Paradiso over the past few weeks. This collection is from Julian and Lynn on their climb. We are still seeing groups on some of the ice and snow faces of the Alps, with routes such as the Contamine Mazaud and Grizole on Tacul and the Demi-Lune on the Petite Verte still in very good condition. Our Tech Ice & Classics groups ascend these.

A few days ago we saw 19 clients and guides summit Mont Blanc in just one day, and the summit records keep rolling in. The conditions on both the Gouter and Traverse / Trois Mont Blanc routes are very stable, with good snow cover on the glacier making the snow bridges very safe and a very low risk of rockfall in the Gouter couloir. The majority of our teams have ascended from the Gouter hut, as it provides the shortest summit climb, and so the best success rates on the highest Alpine peak.

This course does exactly what it says on the tin. Over the week you will ascend three summits in three different countries, with up to two nights spent in mountain huts. This course is popular for trekkers seeking the next challenge, and the aim for the week is to tackle summits such as the Breithorn (Switzerland), Mont Blanc du Tacul (France), and Gran Paradiso (Italy). We still have two remaining spaces on the course running 1-7 August 2010, for those seeking a last minute trip.

Thousands of runners took part including Sarah and Kingsley from our Chamonix office and guiding team. It was a first marathon for Sarah, and a warm up for the North Face CCC Ultra-Trail in August for Kingsley. They enjoyed running with several past clients, but with temperatures in the 30's it was a hard race due to the heat.

This is the highest peak that is entirely in Italy, and stands in its own national park, once the hunting reserve of the king Victor Emmanuel, whose name is taken by the mountain hut most popularly chosen to make an ascent to the summit. The mountain offers a great variety of routes from the normal route that our Alpine Intro groups ascend at the end of the week (as well as on our winter ski ascents), to the steep North Face that is tackled on our Summer North Faces courses.

In the summer months the famous Haute Route, from Chamonix to Zermatt, can be made on foot as most of the deep winter snows have melted. The traverse requires no mountaineering experience, as all the skills required are taught to you by the leader during the week. Most nights are spent in mountain refuges on a half board basis. This course appeals to a hillwalker who likes to get away from it all, and pick up trekking tips from the guide. 26 Jun - 3 Jul (2 sp), 31 Jul - 7 Aug (4 sp).

Any lightweight trekking or soft shell style climbing trousers are fine, but if you are buying some anyway, opt for lighter colours (not black) so you do not get too hot in the sun. Internal features such as snow skirts are good, but an optional bonus as you normally wear gaiters over the top of the trousers for the majority of the time. Also check that the waist buckle / fastening system is comfy to wear under your climbing harness, so it does not rub. Other features to look for are crampon / scuff patches.

Your first trip to the Alps is your most important and most rewarding, as you begin your Alpine climbing career, and learn safety skills that you will use for the rest of your life in the mountains. A key feature of the Intro course is that you attempt a 4000m peak, such as Gran Paradiso, at the end of the week. This involves a day ascending to a mountain hut for the night, and an Alpine start the next morning to ascend the peak. For this course no previous climbing or mountaineering skills are required.

The kit advice pages have been written by our guiding team, so you get top tips from pro's who use the kit every day, rather than a brand biased shop sales assistant, who often has never used the kit, let alone who climbs / treks / skis.

Our courses are based on three training days to acclimatise and build up skills on a 1:2 guiding ratio on routes such as the Dent du Geant, before heading over to Switzerland to make your main ascent on a 1:1 ratio for speed and safety. Both peaks require a high level or fitness, and good previous climbing experience.

This is a week of summit bagging, whilst exploring some of the best routes in the Alps. As you are based from Chamonix which is in the centre of the Alps, it is easy to access the different climbing regions, each with their own personality. The aim is to stay in the mountains while you climb three peaks in three different countries; Gran Paradiso 4061m - Italy, Mont Blanc du Tacul 4248m - France, Breithorn 4164m - Switzerland. Several nights are spent in high mountain huts.

This approaching summer season is already looking very busy, but if your ideal date is already shown as full, don't worry as we can often run a tailor made course on the same date at a 1:2 or 1:1 ratio throughout. This is already proving a very popular option for Mont Blanc courses. On the availability page, you'll see that we have released our course dates for next winter too. All bookings can be made online via our secure SSL encrypted servers, and we are fully bonded to protect your monies.

Here is a photo from our first Haute Route ski tour group of this year, with some of the team on the summit of the Tete Blanche, with the Matterhorn behind. They reported good snow conditions on the tour. On the first day they opted for ascending the Col du Passon as the Col du Chardonnnet was too icy. This week our second group repeated this choice as now the Chardonnet is too avalanche prone! How a week has changed things. There are 2 spaces on the 18-24 April course.

If you read the latest BMC Summit magazine (No 57), you will find an article one of our guiding team wrote about Mount Toubkal on page 26. The winter ascent of Toubkal is one of our most popular trekking courses, and this article gives a good insight into the classic route and the history of ascending this peak. Our trips for this winter have all had a 100% summiting record, so well done all. Mohammed, our local guide, is setting off next week for a ski touring ascent of the peak.

This weeks Off Piste clinic skied the Vallee Blanche on Wednesday, and here you can see the group before the descent past the Requin Hut. Behind them you can see a wall of cloud bubbling over from the Italian border. This is a classic example of foehn wind, which is generated with southerly winds forcing a saturated air mass to uplift and condense, before it dries through precipitation, and warms quicker on its descent into the Chamonix valley causing spring snow conditions.

Early season reports are of good conditions, with good snowfalls in the last weeks. This is no surprise as snowshoeing is a great way for a family or group of friends to go out and share an amazing experience together. Our week long courses with accommodation are just £499, which is amazing value. We have just 2 remaining spaces on the 7-13 February and 7-13 March courses. See our selection of snowshoe courses.

These courses are always popular, and the first course of the winter ascended a high col in Italy on Monday, then on Tuesday focused on avalanche awareness, route planning in winter, and the use of ARVA's (avalanche transceivers). On Wednesday they summited the Aiguille du Toule, then on Thursday spent the day on the Mer de Glace ice climbing and learning about glacier travel. On the Friday they wrapped up the week with a day of waterfall ice climbing at the Cremerie icefalls.

The off piste skiing conditions are great in Chamonix at the moment, as you can see from this photo taken on the Vallée Blanche of one of our groups. This week we also have an off piste group in Verbier, and reports back from them say that the conditions over there are good too, with fresh untracked powder fields still to be found. The next few weeks are very busy with courses in Chamonix, Zermatt and Verbier. We have 2 last minute spaces on the Chamonix Off Piste course 7-13 February.

Last year we filled every space on our Haute Route ski tours, and they ran every week in the key touring season. We follow the classic route from Grand Montets in Chamonix, across to Trient, Verbier, Monfort, then Prafleuri and Arolla, before ascending to the amazing Bertol hut perched on a rock ridge, and the long ski down to Zermatt. Spaces are limited to a maximum of six clients with a guide, so you are encouraged to book early. For full itinerary, scheduled dates and details of private groups.

Here's one of the first summit photos on Mount Toubkal for this winter. Toubkal is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, and is 4167m high. The current conditions are quite dry and icy, but clear and cold. So far this season 100% of clients have reached the summit. A key feature of the trek is staying in Berber villages on the acclimatisation days, before moving up to the Neltner refuge for the summit climb. There are some final spaces 6-13 February, 6-13 March and 3-10 April.
