PHOTO - On the Couloir de Table
The Couloir de Table is a direct line up the South Face of the
East Flank of the Aiguille de Tour. It is only in condition in Winter or early
summer, and this ascent was made in July 2003. The snow was in great condition,
and so the ascent was made quickly. The image is a favourite, not because of its
looks, but as it is a reminder of a great day in the mountains. At the top of
the couloir, we followed the sharp ridge across the North and South summits, before
making a complete traverse of the ridge to the summit of the Aiguille du Purtscheller,
and back down to the Albert Premier hut.

PHOTO - Tutto Relativo in Cogne
In the Winter of 2003/4, the ice conditions varied a lot throughout
the year, due to changes in temperature and the various snowfalls. At the start
of the year we visited Tutto Relativo in Val de Cogne, a WI.4. ice climb, and
it was too fragile to ascend, but this photo is of our ascent in February, when
the ice conditions were much better. The photo is of the third pitch, which is
a free standing pillar of ice, and it forms in a overhanging amphitheatre of dark
rock. This image shows the fragility of the ice, with the delicate icicles forming
against the backdrop of the foreboding rock structure.

PHOTO - Bosses Arête Sunrise
This photo was taken in early June 2004 on an ascent of Mont Blanc.
It was at about 5:30 in the morning, and the sun was just rising in the East.
The sun picked out the sea of clouds that covered the Aiguilles Rouges, and the
range of colours in the sky was amazing. The thin cloud formations were due to
the high wind that day, though this didn't stop us reaching the top. The image
really shows the different world that the high altitude climber can experience
every time they ascend a mountain, with the vast contrasts of the beauty of the
landscape, and the harshness of the environment.

Mont Blanc du Tacul | | FAVOURITE
PHOTO - Mont Blanc du Tacul One
night in 2002, I was bivouacing on the Julien Arête above the Col du Midi,
when the sun was setting. The colours and contrasts on the North Face Triangle
of Tacul were given this amazing hue because the sun was shining through thin
storm clouds that caused it to snow later that night. Although it looks like the
mountain is in Winter conditions, the photo was actually taken in August, after
a week of heavy snowfalls. The conditions on all the North Face routes, such as
the Chere Couloir and the Contamines Grizole, were all brought into great condition
for several weeks.

PHOTO - Sunset from Pampas de Lenas Camp
This photo was taken on the last day of our Aconcagua expedition
in January 2005, when on the trek off the mountain. Our final camp was at Pampas
de Lenas at 2700m, at which altitude we got our first really good nights sleep
after the climb. The sunset turned the sky a deep purple colour, and just as the
sun set, the ridge was picked out by the last rays of sunlight. The characteristic
red hue of the Andean rocks is really well displayed. This photo was chosen as
it signified the end of our expedition, and it was great to watch the
colours evolve as we relaxed after the
22km trek down from the
Base Camp at Plaza Argentina at 4200m.

PHOTO - The Leschaux Hut in Winter
Without an explanation, you probably wouldn't guess what this photo
is of, and that is what makes so interesting. It shows the outside of the Leschaux
mountain hut after it had been avalanched and then covered in yet more snowfalls.
The image makes two key points; firstly that our existance in the mountains is
so marginal especially in winter conditions, and secondly the photo evokes a feeling
of safety in that the hut provides an escape from the cold weather outside. In
fact this wasn't quite the case, as even after we had cooked inside, we measured
the temperature in the hut as -36°.
