Employment opportunities at Icicle
Icicle is a specialist provider of guided Alpine courses and worldwide expeditions. The range of courses includes: climbing, off piste skiing, mountaineering, ski touring, snowshoeing and trekking. Our aim is to exceed the expectations of our clients, to realise their ambitions, and to provide the best quality experiences possible. Our mission is to have the best safety and summiting records of any mountaineering company in the world. How we achieve these goals, is by hiring the best staff in the business, and training them further.
Leaders and Qualifications
In the Alps the laws governing what levels of leader are qualified to take groups are very strict. All climbing, glacier travel, and off piste skiing must be led by an IFMGA / UIAGM International Mountain Guide. The UK qualifications of MIC, MIA, ML(W), ML(S) & SPA have zero standing in the Alps. For groups involved in snowshoeing, trekking, and avalanche awareness a UIMLA International Mountain Leader is the qualification required. Whatever course you are on, we ALWAYS adhere strictly to these qualifications standards. Our leaders are our most important asset as far as both the clients and we are concerned, and we take great care in recruiting suitable leaders.
To meet our team of IFMGA Guides and IML leaders, click here (use if the IFMGA and UIMLA logos below are authorised by the named course directors on this linked page). Anyone who applies for a leader position will be required to provide copies of their qualification(s) certificates, their professional carnet, and insurance details.
International Mountain Guides
We always welcome extra applicants to join our team of over 30 mountain guides. There is a variety of positions from full time to freelance that are available. Applicants must speak fluent English and French.
International Mountain Leaders
Any vacancies for IML's will be advertised through the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML), and will be posted on the BAIML website forum. We would then welcome applications from qualified IML's.

Want to become a IFMGA Guide or UIMLA Leader?
Each year we get several e-mails from people saying they want to work for free or a low wage, to work alongside our guiding team to get enough experience to become qualified. We do not cater for this for three key reasons; 1) it is illegal for anyone to work in the Alps assisting leading a group who is not qualified already, 2) an extra person joining a guided group comes under the duty of care of the qualified guide leading that group, and so reduces the number of spaces for paying clients which makes this completely financially unviable, or 3) the amount of previous experience required before even starting to train on one of the guiding schemes is so great that there is no possible way to get the experience over one season. For details about the training schemes, click on one of these links; IFMGA Guides or UIMLA Leaders.
Non-instructional staff
To support all the guides and leaders, we have a range of non-instructional support roles. Please note that none of these roles involve leading, nor even accompanying our groups in the mountains, but they offer a great opportunity for those wishing to learn more about the outdoor industry, and to gain experience.
Office staff - Currently we do not have any vacancies for office staff either in the UK or French office. As opportunities arise we will advertise them here, so keep an eye out! As no vacancies are advertised, don't apply.
Chamonix Cleaners - We are always on the lookout for cleaners for our Chamonix accommodation. This is on a part time basis, and payment is on a per flat basis. No accommodation or lift pass is included in the package.
Chamonix Resort Hosts - Each summer we offer two people the opportunity of gaining a season of work experience in Chamonix. For this role we are not seeking future mountaineering and skiing stars, as we are more concerned with fostering high quality client care standards in Chamonix. There is much day to day work around the Chamonix office and the accommodation, from cleaning to stores, maintenance to entertainment. You are paid a small wage plus free accommodation. We are looking for mature responsible individuals with a variety of relevant outdoor experience who will work well together with the rest of the Icicle team. To apply for this role, please send a letter of application with 200 words outlining why we should choose you, with a CV and photo of yourself, to Sarah in the Chamonix office (click for e-mail address). Please note that it is absolutely essential that anyone applying for this role has attended one of our week long courses, so they know how things are operated in the Alps. If you haven't been on a course, sorry but please don't apply.
